Celebrate Black Heritage Month at Yorkminster Park

Join us this February for a dynamic celebration of Black Heritage Month at Yorkminster Park. Our inspiring lineup of worship services, workshops, and presentations honors the rich legacy and contributions of the Black community.

Special Sunday Worship Services
We are thrilled to welcome distinguished guests to our Sunday worship services:

Sunday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m.
Dr. James Abbington, Associate Professor of Church Music and Worship at Emory University, will join Rev. Dr. J. Peter Holmes in a dialogue sermon. The service will feature hymns from Dr. Abbington's collection, "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism: An African American Ecumenical Hymnal". Later that evening at 4:30 p.m., Dr. Abbington will lead an uplifting ecumenical hymn sing alongside the Yorkminster Park Baptist Church Choir and guest choirs.

Sunday, February 23 at 11:00 a.m.
We are honored to host Rev. Dr. Lennett J. Anderson, Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, as our guest minister. Dr. Anderson, a beloved keynote speaker at the Lester Randall Preaching Fellowship, will bring his powerful message to Yorkminster Park once again.

Workshop/ Participatory Lecture: The Hymns of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Saturday, February 1, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Dr. Abbington will lead an engaging workshop, "The Lyrical Theology of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.", exploring King's favorite hymns and their theological significance.

Dr. James Abbington explores the rich hymnology of the African American Church.

Bernice Carnegie shares the legacy of her father, Canadian icon Herbert Henry Carnegie, and her ongoing work in social justice and positive interaction.

February 12: "A Conversation with Dr. Jean Augustine"
The Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine reflects on her groundbreaking achievements and the evolution of Black History Month.

February 19: "Diversity and Advocacy in Policing"
R. David Mitchell, Co-chair of the Durham Regional Police Service Diversity Advisory Committee, discusses diversity in policing and youth advocacy.
