Black History Month Musical Guest Bios

Dr. Winston K. Hurlock

Dr. Hurlock, a classically trained soloist, an ordained minister, and music teacher has served in the Ontario Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist for 35 years. He has travelled extensively as a performing vocal soloist in Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Africa, and the Caribbean. Additionally, he has made several appearances on ‘It Is Written Telecast' as a vocal soloist and supporting panellist.

His accolades include the Kiwanis Festival of music award and the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee award. In 2017, he published his first book entitled, Music and Worship, Contemporary Issues in worship. He is also the founder and speaker of Revelation Revealed Minister, aired on YouTube each Friday night 9:00-10:00 pm.


Jackie Richardson

Jackie Richardson is an award-winning actress and one of Canada's foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz whose career includes performances in concert, radio, television, and recordings. She's performed across Canada and in countries around the world. Jackie has received NAACP, Juno, Betty, Dora, Jesse, Gemini, TBS and Canadian Equity Association Lifetime Achievement Awards and Nominations. Jackie was honored by the Toronto Star's Commemoration of Toronto's 180th Birthday as one of 180 people considered to have helped shape our city and was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Canada in 2021.

Although her most recent accomplishments are too numerous to be listed, Jackie considers her involvement with The Stephen Lewis Foundation's "South Africa Grandmothers Gathering in Durbin", "The Nina Simone Project" , Regent Park's "The Journey", Christmas concerts with The Orpheus Choir/Hanniford Brass Band, The Art of Time Ensemble, The Salvation Army Choir and Orchestra, and Jazz FM's Cuba Excursion with daughter Kim as her 2016 highlights. 2017 was the year of Canada's 150th Birthday and Jackie was excited about all the many planned celebratory events. In particular, the Gala Concert "A Place to Stand: A Celebration of 150 Years of Ontario and Canada" hosted by The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario at Roy Thomson and Soul Pepper Theatre's Across the Border" program which represented Canada in New York City for the month of July.

Richardson has a passion for human rights and social justice. High on Jackie's list is a passionate need to bring more focus and support to women and children's issues.


Andrew Craig

Andrew Craig serves as an artivist (artist+activist) and educator, based in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Now in his third decade of professional artmaking, he creates, performs, directs, and produces original music, theatre, and video content, in addition to his teaching practice and social justice work. Joe Sealy

For more than five decades Joe Sealy has enjoyed a successful career as a musician, actor, composer, music director and recording artist. Tours have also played a significant part in Joe's career. Some of the more notable ones include 6 months on the road with Blood, Sweat and Tears, 19 concert tour of Africville Suite and a 20-city national tour of Timothy Findlay's Piano Man's Daughter.

All of this work and success has not gone unnoted. Joe is both proud of, and humbled by, the acclaim he has received. Major awards include: a Juno Award for CD, Africville Suite; the Dora Mavor Moore Award for music direction in the Toronto production of Ain't Misbehavin; and a Gemini Award nomination for his musical score for the documentary film The Road Taken.

More recently, Joe was music director for tribute concerts honoring Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington and for a 100th anniversary concert honoring Frank Sinatra. Both sold out events were held at Toronto's Koerner Hall.

Currently, Joe is music director for "Canada's Crooner", Colin Hunter with appearances at New York's famous Blue Note in 2017 and at Los Angeles' Vibrato Jazz Club in 2019. Joe has also hosted his own radio shows, Joe Sealy's Duets, and Joe's Jazz on Jazz FM 91 in Toronto for the past 15 years.

In 2010, Joe was invested in The Order of Canada.


Paul Novotny

We are privileged to also welcome Paul Novotny, who is accompanying Jackie on bass. Paul is an interdisciplinary artist who from an early age mastered a number of instruments, but after graduating from the music program at Humber College was launched into a career as a bass player with the Brian Browne trio. Paul has performed with countless jazz luminaries and recorded several albums with Robi Botos including their most recent album, Summertime in Leith. Some of his recent performances include, Huntsville's Algonquin Theatre, The Waterloo Uptown Jazz Festival, Showplace (Peterborough), The Leith Summer Festival, The Elora Summer Festival and The Burlington Performing Arts Centre.
